History[ | ]

An ivory blur leaps across the Tokyo rooftops, high over the heads of the oblivious public. Corruption gnaws at the neon city’s heart. A savior is needed, a warrior unafraid to answer the call, to battle the darkness festering in the hearts of all mankind. The dashing figure halts at the edge of a dilapidated apartment building’s roof. Bathed in the glow of the crimson street lamp below, the mysterious man watches a group of armed men surround a well-dressed individual as he exits a sleek black vehicle. As he draws a long gleaming katana, he announces himself to the wind, "I am Tokyo’s hero, the cowled champion of this city; the Otaku Defender!" Leaping from his perch, he lands among the men, twirling his blade in wide arcs, leaving only streaks of red on the pavement. Alerted by his monologue, the target is able to jump out of the frey and disappear into the night. Jet wipes his blade, tosses the rag aside and gives chase, only to trip over a corpse and land on his face amidst the blood and gore.

Jet’s father, head of the Yakuza and arguably the most powerful man in Japan, chastised the mopey young man when he returned from his failed outing. The rival boss had gotten away while Jet had untangled himself from the bodies. When tears formed at the edges of Jet’s eyes, his father relented, unable to stay angry at his only son. He patted Jet on the back and promised to buy him better equipment, for next time.

A self-styled vigilante, Jet was inspired by the comic book heroes of his youth. Jet’s father acquired him the best gear and had him followed by a cadre of his top men, unbeknownst to Jet of course. They took him on low level assignments and talked up their targets. Jet’s ‘ghetto fu’ moves somehow took out all his adversaries, often without actually hitting them. With his prized katana, Jet cut down many of his father’s enemies and didn’t question it when a lucky bullet would happen to drop an enemy just as they were aiming a pistol his way. Jet, of course, thought this was his doing. He didn't realize that his father had assigned him a team of ranged weapon experts. He merely focused on the music blasting through his headphones and ‘let the rhythm guide him’. Those that saw him fight said his moves seemed more like improv dance than martial expertise.

His panache gained him swarms of fans and the type of attention that most members of the Yakuza would detest. Yet Jet saw his growing fandom as a mark of a true superhero. Returning home from a day of posing for pictures with his adoring public, Jet found the guards outside his house dead. He rushed inside, threw open his father’s office door only to find him, too, bleeding on the floor. Devastated, Jet cradled his father’s cold body in his arms, unconsciously thinking of the similarity between his situation and many of his superhero idols’. He drew his sword, vowed revenge, and ran into the night. The sunrise found an exhausted Jet, still staggering aimlessly, desperate for any sign of those who had killed his father. Just then, his phone buzzed, a message with an address and time.

Upon arriving, Jet found his uncle waiting for him. His uncle laughed as he explained his jealousy and inevitable betrayal. Jet, barely listening, put on his headphones and queued up some music. The guards felt a certain pity for this young man who clearly couldn’t cope with the loss of his father and relaxed a bit as Jet’s body went into an unrehearsed dance break. He managed to take out two of them before they realized he was an actual threat and restrained him, headphones and all. Unwilling to make a martyr of Tokyo’s beloved dark defender, Jet was instead put into a machine the Yakuza had stolen from a local laboratory,

Strapping Jet in, the Yakuza flipped the switch and Jet awoke to find himself stranded on a gleaming, alien world. Gripping his sword, he vowed to kill whoever stood between him and his father’s murderer. He reached instinctively for his headphones and found them still draped around his neck. Jet stood a little straighter as he situated the earbuds and bobbed his head, ready to face this new world. "With great responsibility...", he thought to himself as he took a step forward...and tripped headlong into a bush.
